Blue Run High Rye Bourbon Whiskey

Jim Rutledge's retirement from Four Roses lasted about four hours — that's how long it took Castle & Key to call — and the High Rye Bourbon is the first Blue Run whiskey he distilled himself. Blue Run was founded in 2020 by an unlikely crew: a Nike designer, Facebook's first director-level employee, a hospitality executive, and a political advisor, with the Bourbon Hall of Famer as liquid advisor. They "sneakerized" bourbon with limited drops of 13-year-plus single barrels that sold out instantly and hit $1,000 on the secondary market; the High Rye is the accessible answer. Rutledge distilled it at Castle & Key in 2017 from a 65% corn, 30% rye, 5% malted barley recipe — nearly identical to the high-rye mash he built his reputation on at Four Roses — aged at least four years, batched from around 230 barrels, and bottled at 111 proof. Bourbon Obsessed found it unlike anything else distilled at Castle & Key — quite different from prior Blue Run releases, and quite good — and noted Rutledge would of course create a unique high-rye bourbon. The Whiskey Fool: an inviting nose of rye spice, toffee, and oak, a palate of baking spice and sweet caramel, and a finish of dark fruit, cinnamon, and black pepper, packing lots of complexity into each sip. Honest note: it's young, and some find the mouthfeel thinner than the proof suggests. Bourbon By Proxy: affordable and very powerful. The butterfly bottle is a shelf standout. Neat, or a Manhattan.
