Ferrand Single Cask Collection 2001 21 Year Grande Champagne Cognac
Maison Ferrand traces its roots to Segonzac in the heart of Grande Champagne, where the Ferrand family has grown vines since the 15th century; Alexandre Gabriel revived the house in 1989 and built it into one of the cru's most respected independent producers. The Single Cask Collection releases individual barrels from the Ferrand cellars without blending, chill-filtration or dilution. This limited edition was distilled in 2001 from Grande Champagne Ugni Blanc, double distilled in copper pot stills on the lees in the house style, and matured 21 years in a single French oak cask before bottling at cask strength, 50.2% ABV (100.4 proof), in a 750ml bottle. Retailer Uncle Fossil describes a rich amber color with golden highlights, a nose of dried apricot and fig, jasmine, iris, vanilla and toasted oak, a palate of honeyed oak, caramelized sugar, ripe pear, baked apple, cinnamon and nutmeg, and a long, harmonious finish of dried fruit and light oak. With two decades in wood and no reduction, it shows the rancio depth that Grande Champagne is prized for, and each cask yields only a few hundred bottles.
