François Voyer XO Grande Champagne 1er Cru comes from a family estate at Le Maine Verret in Verrières, where the Voyers have farmed since 1795 and distilled since 1870; cellar master Pierre Vaudon has owned the house since 2017 and works 28 hectares of Ugni Blanc in Grande Champagne, Cognac's premier cru. The house distills on the lees, ages new spirit three years in medium-toasted Limousin oak, then transfers it to older casks for long, slow maturation that Grande Champagne demands. This XO is a blend of Grande Champagne eaux-de-vie that reviewers at WhiskyNotes estimate at roughly 15 to 25 years old, well beyond the 10-year XO minimum, bottled at 40% ABV (80 proof) in a 750ml bottle. WhiskyNotes scored it 86 points, describing quince, peach, baked apple, candied orange peel, golden raisin, florals, tropical fruit and cocoa-dusted hazelnut on the nose, an oily palate of orange, quince, apricot, mango and papaya with light vanilla and subtle rancio, and a medium finish of candied citrus peel, almond and plum. Tastings.com rated the related XO Gold 95 points, placing Voyer among the top-scoring independent Grande Champagne houses.
