Hennessy V.S.O.P Privilège traces its origins to 1817, when the future King George IV of England asked the house for a Very Superior Old Pale cognac, making it the original VSOP and the template for the category. Today the blend is assembled by Master Blender Renaud Fillioux de Gironde from around 60 eaux-de-vie sourced across the four premier crus of Cognac, Grande Champagne, Petite Champagne, Borderies and Fins Bois, distilled from Ugni Blanc wine in copper pot stills. The eaux-de-vie are aged in French Limousin oak casks, with components ranging from four to roughly 15 years old, and the house favors seasoned barrels so the fruit stays in balance with the wood. Hennessy describes V.S.O.P Privilège as a harmonious, well-structured cognac with notes of vanilla, clove, cinnamon, toasted oak and dried fruit over a soft, lingering finish, built for drinking neat or over a single large ice cube. Bottled at 40% ABV in a 750ml decanter, it remains the benchmark VSOP and the most widely poured premium cognac in the world.
