Maison Gautier VSOP Cognac
Maison Gautier is one of the oldest houses in Cognac, officially founded in 1755 under a royal warrant signed by Louis XV, though the Gautier family had been making spirits and casks from Troncais oak in the Charente since the 16th century. The house is based in a former watermill on the Osme river at Aigre, nicknamed the Little Venice of Charente, where the river's natural humidity shapes the slow maturation of its eaux-de-vie. Gautier VSOP blends Ugni Blanc eaux-de-vie from four crus, Grande Champagne, Petite Champagne, Fins Bois and Bons Bois, double distilled in copper pot stills and aged six years in Limousin oak barrels, well beyond the four-year VSOP minimum. Bottled at 40% ABV in a 750ml bottle, it shows a brilliant amber color. Reviewer BevX awarded it 4.5 stars and described a nose of baked apple, pear and peach backed by caramel, vanilla, dried fruit and spicy oak, with a medium to full-bodied palate of toffee, brown baking spice, dark chocolate, ginger and orange peel. It works neatly as an after-dinner sipper or as the base for a Sidecar or Sazerac.
