Corsair Dark Rye American Rye Malt Whiskey is one of the more inventive ryes in America, from Corsair Distillery in Nashville, Tennessee, a craft pioneer known for its experimental grain bills and its Triple Smoke malt. Formerly sold as Ryemageddon, Dark Rye is made from a mash of 61% malted rye, 4% malted chocolate rye and 35% malted barley, a recipe borrowed from brewing that brings the roasted, cocoa-tinged character of a dark beer into whiskey. It is bottled at 85 proof.
Drinkhacker rated it an A-, praising a youthful spirit that shows surprising maturity, with matchsticks, pan-toasted grain and a little smoke on the nose, toasty grain followed by caramel and chocolate on the palate, and a finish of barrel char balanced by baking spice and butterscotch. Corsair describes spicy rye with dark chocolate and warm oak, caramel, vanilla and dried fruit. Because the entire mash is malted, it drinks with a rounder, maltier texture than a typical rye, and the chocolate malt gives it a stout-like depth. A fun one for beer lovers and a great base for a coffee-tinged Old Fashioned.
