Crown Royal Black Canadian Whisky
Crown Royal was created in 1939 by Samuel Bronfman, president of Seagram, as a tribute to the royal tour of Canada by King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, the first visit to North America by a reigning British monarch, and it stayed a Canada-only whisky until 1964. Today it is made at Diageo's Gimli distillery in Manitoba, a round-the-clock operation that distills several distinct base whiskies, including rye from the only Coffey still running in Canada, and matures them in roughly 1.4 million casks across 46 warehouses. Crown Royal Black arrived in late 2009, a bolder take on the house blend crafted by Master Blender Andrew MacKay, matured in charred oak barrels and blended at a higher proof for a more concentrated flavor. It is bottled at 90 proof (45% ABV), compared with 80 proof for the standard Deluxe. The brand's notes describe a dark red-brown color, a nose with a deeper oak background, sweet maple and light vanilla, a creamy, velvety palate with subtle dried fruit, mainly fig, and a finish with deeper bourbon-like notes that stays smooth at the higher strength. It comes in a black version of the signature bag.
