Elijah Craig Straight Rye Whiskey is Heaven Hill's rye under its flagship bourbon brand, launched in January 2020 as a permanent addition to the lineup. It is a Kentucky straight rye made from Heaven Hill's traditional rye mash bill of 51% rye, 35% corn and 14% malted barley, the same recipe behind Rittenhouse and Pikesville, and bottled at 94 proof with no age statement.
Because the mash is only just over half rye, this is a rounder, sweeter style than the 95% ryes from Indiana. Breaking Bourbon's tasting notes describe black pepper and summer fruit on the nose, kettle corn and caramel on the palate followed by allspice and nutmeg, and a finish that builds into vanilla and butterscotch before the rye spice arrives. It is approachable, well made and priced for everyday drinking, which makes it a versatile house rye for Manhattans, Old Fashioneds and Sazeracs.
