Frey Ranch is one of the very few genuine estate distilleries on earth — and the claim means exactly what it says. Every grain in every bottle is planted, grown, harvested, malted, milled, mashed, fermented, distilled, aged, and bottled on the same family farm in Fallon, Nevada. The Freys have farmed this ground since 1854, before Nevada was a state, first at the foot of the Sierra and later in Fallon, drawn by water flowing down from Lake Tahoe through the Truckee and Carson Rivers. Fifth-generation farmer Colby Frey grew up repairing tractors on the place, and in 2006 he and his wife Ashley secured the first distillery license issued in Nevada since Prohibition — frustrated that the high-quality grain they grew simply got trucked off and shipped overseas without anyone ever tasting what it could become. They distilled the first bourbon in 2015, aged it five years, and released it in late 2019. The flagship Straight Bourbon uses a four-grain mash bill of 67% corn, 12% malted barley, 11% rye, and 10% wheat, all from roughly 1,500 acres of the ranch, with the barley malted in the family's own malt house. Under master distiller Russell Wedlake the range now spans Straight Bourbon, a 100% rye, Single Barrel selections, and Farm Strength Uncut, the barrel-proof expression. Colby puts it simply: in wine, everyone talks about terroir. In whiskey, almost nobody can — because almost nobody grows their own grain.
