Aurora is the Crystal Head Dan Aykroyd made when he refused to do a flavored vodka. The Ghostbusters and Blues Brothers star founded Crystal Head with artist John Alexander in 2008 on a purity pitch — no glycerol for viscosity, no citrus oil, no sugar, nothing added — and when it came time to extend the line, he changed the grain instead. Aurora is made from English wheat grown in North Yorkshire, distilled five times in a column still at the Newfoundland and Labrador Liquor Corporation distillery in St. John's, cut with Newfoundland aquifer water, and filtered seven times — three of them through layers of Herkimer diamonds, which Aykroyd admits may not do much but which blind tasters preferred. Bottled at 40% ABV in the iridescent, aurora-finished skull. The Rum Howler scored it 86: a drier, more peppery vodka than the corn-based Original, with a clean grain spice. Cocktails & Bars said it took them by surprise, and Maxim notes it plays best in savory drinks — Dirty Martinis and Bloody Marys. Expect a crisp, clean nose with a faint wheat-bread note, opening into a dry, peppery, precise palate with none of the corn Original's sweetness, finishing clean and brisk.
