"We won the Revolutionary War, so why are we still drinking British gin?" That was Bluecoat's pitch when it launched in 2006, named for the blue coats of the Continental Army, and it effectively invented the category now called American Dry. Philadelphia Distilling was the first craft distillery to open in Pennsylvania since Prohibition, and Bluecoat was one of the first spirits off its hand-hammered copper pot still: a four-grain base of barley, corn, rye, and wheat, distilled five times, with 100% certified organic botanicals — a softer, rounder juniper, American citrus peels not found in most gins, angelica, and coriander — bottled at 47% ABV (94 proof). It won Double Gold and Best Gin at the 2009 San Francisco World Spirits Competition and Best in Class at the 2007 IWSC.
