Boodles contains no citrus, and that's on purpose. The original distillers reasoned that any proper gin drink already gets a slice of lemon or lime, so putting citrus in the recipe would be redundant — a bit of 1845 logic that still defines the gin. It's named for Boodle's, the St. James's gentlemen's club founded in 1762 and run by head waiter Edward Boodle, whose members over the years included Winston Churchill (reportedly a devotee of the gin) and Ian Fleming. The recipe is nine botanicals: juniper, coriander seed, angelica root and seed, cassia bark, caraway seed, nutmeg, rosemary, and sage, distilled from British wheat spirit in a Carter-head still at G&J Greenall, England's oldest gin distiller, and bottled for the US at a proper 45.2% ABV (90.4 proof). The Beverage Testing Institute rated it 93 points, Exceptional. Wine Enthusiast's blind panel found a classic juniper-pine aroma and, despite the absence of citrus, a grapefruit-like flavor finishing on coriander, rosemary, and black pepper. The Gin Is In called it a quintessential classic-style gin — robust, resinous juniper with plenty of angelica on the nose, then caraway, a lemon-rind impression mid-palate from the coriander, cinnamon bark, and a deli-rye note on a warming finish; bartenders can make any cocktail with it and get a predictable outcome. Drinkhacker added rosemary and white pepper. Old-school, spiced, herbal, and honest — a Martini and G&T gin with a slice of lemon, as intended.
