Bummer and Lazarus were the two most famous dogs in 1860s San Francisco — stray mutts so beloved that the city exempted them from leash laws, newspapers covered their exploits, and the eccentric Emperor Norton was said to be their companion. Raff Distillerie on Treasure Island named its gin for them, and the spirit is as San Franciscan as the story: a grape-based gin, distilled from California grape brandy rather than neutral grain spirit on hand-built stills, with a traditional botanical bill and a bold profile. The grape base is the whole point — it gives the gin a rounder, softer, subtly fruity texture that wheat or corn can't.
