Drumshanbo Gunpowder Ceramic Irish Gin

Drumshanbo is a village of a few hundred people on the shores of Lough Allen in County Leitrim, and PJ Rigney's Shed Distillery — founded there in 2014, the first new distillery in Connacht in over a century — makes Ireland's best-selling gin in it. The name comes from gunpowder tea: slowly dried Chinese green tea rolled into tight pellets, one of the oriental botanicals Rigney fuses with Irish ones in his medieval-style copper pot stills. The process splits in two: juniper, angelica, orris, caraway, cardamom, coriander, star anise, and local meadowsweet — a flowering herb from the meadows around the village — are steeped and distilled in the pot, while gunpowder tea, Chinese lemon, oriental grapefruit, and kaffir lime go into baskets for vapor infusion. Wine Enthusiast's blind panel found an assertive citrusy aroma with a hint of tropical fruit, a minty, light palate with plenty of juniper, and a tingly, drying finish of grapefruit peel and powdery florals.
