Batch No. 1 is East London Liquor Company's premium gin — the more expressive sibling of its workhorse London Dry, from the first distillery to make spirits in East London in over a hundred years. Founder Alex Wolpert opened ELLC in 2014 in a former glue factory in Bow Wharf, in the corner of the city that once anchored London's gin trade, and Batch No. 1 is where the distillery stretches out: a citrus-forward recipe that piles on fresh lime and orange zest alongside miyagawa peel, a variety of Japanese satsuma, then balances it with Douglas fir and cubeb berries over a juniper spine. Bottled at 45% ABV. EZ Drinking found a light floral note backed by lemon zest on the nose, then a slightly dry palate that opens earthy and almost salty before a powerful, well-balanced medley of lemon and pomelo, finishing bright with violet, orange blossom, and a slight pine bitterness from the fir and juniper — very citrus-forward yet simultaneously balanced, showing nicely in a G&T and adding complexity to a Last Word. Expect vivid satsuma and lime brightness, a resinous, forest-green fir note, cubeb's peppery warmth, and a clean juniper backbone, with more weight and length than the London Dry thanks to the higher proof.
