Monopolowa Gin

Monopolowa is one of the last potato gins on earth, and the reason is history. The J.A. Baczewski name goes back to 1782 in Lwów, then Poland, where the family built one of the most celebrated vodka houses in Europe — "Monopolowa" means "monopoly," a reference to the exclusive production rights the Polish state once granted. World War II nationalized the distilleries, and after the war the Gessler family, Austrian distillers with their own 18th-century roots, acquired the rights to the name and revived it in Vienna, where the company remains family-owned to this day. The gin follows the vodka: a base spirit distilled from special varieties of potatoes rather than grain, cut with Alpine mountain water, and flavored with a classic bill of juniper, orange and lemon peel, coriander, aniseed, fennel, and ginger, bottled at 43.5% ABV (87 proof). The Beverage Testing Institute scored it 93 points, praising "a great combination of vibrancy and elegance," and it's the potato that makes the difference — The Gin Is In found a lovely viscosity, slightly oily with a perceptible thickness that coats the palate and carries the finish.
