Yardstick is the Napa Valley label of Goldschmidt Vineyards, the Healdsburg family winery of veteran winemaker Nick Goldschmidt and his wife Yolyn, and the name reflects their belief that Napa Cabernet is the yardstick against which Cabernet everywhere is measured. Ruth's Reach is named for the Oakville-area vineyard where Goldschmidt sources fruit, a well-drained bench site that delivers the ripe, structured profile of mid-valley Napa, and the wine is made with the same minimal-intervention approach that defines his single-vineyard bottlings: long hang times, extended maceration and careful oak selection. The Cabernet Sauvignon is aged in French oak barrels and bottled at 14.5% ABV. Goldschmidt describes aromas of black cherry, cassis and plum with cedar, vanilla and a hint of dried herbs, followed by a full-bodied palate of blackberry, dark chocolate and mocha, round, supple tannins and a long, toasty finish.
