Goslings Black Seal 80 proof Rum

This is Goslings' flagship, most widely available rum — the standard 80 proof Black Seal that's the actual key ingredient in Bermuda's trademarked national drink, the Dark 'n Stormy, mixed with the brand's own Stormy Ginger Beer. It's built from a 150-year-old family recipe blending aged pot still rum (the kind of still used for fine Cognac) with continuous/column still rum (grappa-style), aged in charred American oak. The Beverage Testing Institute awarded it a Platinum Medal and Best Buy recognition, and Austrian critic publication Falstaff described sandalwood, dark caramel, and clove on the nose, with a dry character that holds up even when diluted. Christopher Null at Drinkhacker called it the most common Gosling's bottling for good reason — smooth over ice, intensely sweet, full of molasses, cinnamon, ginger, and clove, almost passing for a spiced rum. Not everyone agrees it holds up neat, though: one independent reviewer found it thin and a bit unpleasant as a straight sipper, rating it low specifically in that context while still acknowledging it's a solid classic mixer.
