La Maison & Velier 5th Anniversary Flag Series 24 Years Old 1998 Guyana Rum
The Flag Series was released to mark five years of La Maison & Velier, the partnership between the French spirits house La Maison du Whisky and Velier, the Genoa bottler behind some of the most sought-after Demerara rum ever released. This bottling is a single cask of molasses rum distilled in 1998 at Demerara Distillers in Guyana on the Port Mourant still, the wooden double retort pot still built from greenheart timber and famous for producing one of the heaviest, most aromatic rums in the Caribbean. The cask spent its first two years in ex-bourbon barrels in Guyana before moving to Europe, where it finished another 22 years in a Port cask, and it was bottled in 2022 at 24 years old at cask strength of about 60% ABV, with no added sugar. The outturn was 685 bottles of 700ml. VinePair rated it 95 points and named it to its 2024 Top 50, describing a dense, concentrated rum with pineapple, red berry compote and oaky vanilla on the nose, then cacao, citrus zest and salted caramel on the palate. VinePair also notes that it benefits from time in the glass to open up.
