Ed Hamilton — the Minister of Rum — selects this from Worthy Park Estate in Jamaica's Vale of Lluidas, 1,200 feet above sea level, where the molasses comes from sugar grown on the estate itself. It's a blend of extra light, light, and heavy pot still rums, colored with double-strength black sugar-based caramel and bottled at 46.5% ABV. Worth clearing up a widespread error: despite many retailers claiming it's aged up to five years, Hamilton has confirmed directly that the Gold and Black expressions are unaged — the color is caramel, not cask time. What you get is pure, undiluted Jamaican character. Expect heavy molasses, overripe banana, guava, and a grassy freshness on the nose, opening into molasses sweetness, lemon zest, prunes, sun-baked tropical fruit, and vegetal notes, finishing on ripe banana with black pepper and a medicinal tang. Reviewers put it in the same conversation as Smith & Cross and Hampden — one RumRatings user called it the rum that finally taught them what Jamaican funk means. Built for tiki: Zombies, rum barrels, planter's punch, and anywhere a recipe demands dark Jamaican rum.
