Hana is the fruit-flavored sake line from Takara Sake USA in Berkeley, California, the brewery that in 1983 became the first Japanese sake company to brew in the United States. Takara is a branch of Takara Shuzo of Kyoto, founded in 1842 and best known for Sho Chiku Bai, and its Berkeley plant brews from Sacramento Valley Calrose rice and Sierra Nevada snowmelt water. Hana means flower, and the idea is simple: take that clean California sake, infuse it with natural fruit flavor, and bottle it at a gentle 8% ABV so it drinks like a chilled fruit wine rather than a traditional sake.

The 750ml range covers five flavors. Lychee is the signature, a mouthful of ripe lychee with yellow peach and lemon-lime behind it. Fuji Apple is crisp and sweet-tart, White Peach soft and floral, Yuzu the brightest and most aromatic with Japanese citrus zest, and Pineapple the most tropical, built for frozen drinks. Every bottle is kosher certified, gluten free and sulfite free.
