Hanzell Vineyards was founded in 1953 by Ambassador James D. Zellerbach, who planted Chardonnay and Pinot Noir above Sonoma after a trip to Burgundy and pioneered temperature-controlled stainless steel fermentation and French oak in California. The estate, owned by the de Brye family since 1975, is CCOF certified organic and farms with cover crops and no tilling under president Jason Jardine, who took the reins in 2014. Cabernet Sauvignon is a rare bird here: the de Brye and Zellerbach blocks were planted in 2012 on red volcanic clay loam in the Moon Mountain hills of Sonoma Valley. The wine is fermented with native yeasts, blended with roughly 7% Cabernet Franc, 7% Malbec, and 3% Petit Verdot, and aged 18 months in French oak, about a third new, before bottling at around 14.1% alcohol. Wine Enthusiast awarded the 2019 95 points, and the Hanzell style shows blackberry, cassis, dark plum, tobacco, leather, and vanilla with firm tannins, lively acidity, and an earthy, savory, Old World-leaning finish. Pair this 750ml with grilled ribeye, lamb shoulder, or wild mushrooms. Vintages may vary; we ship the current release.
