Harbison Estate Horseshoe Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon
Harbison Estate is a roughly five-acre Cabernet Sauvignon property on the eastern Oakville benchlands, planted in 2005 by Joe and Pat Harbison. Its neighbors are among the most famous addresses in California wine: the Horseshoe block borders Screaming Eagle, with Gargiulo and Tench Vineyards next door. The red, iron-rich, rocky soils are planted to Cabernet clones 7 and 337, and the wines were made by Russell Bevan from 2011 through 2018 before Jean Hoefliger took over. Horseshoe, named for the horseshoes that once littered the block, is a single-clone, single-block bottling of clone 7 Cabernet Sauvignon, barrel-fermented and aged entirely in new French oak and bottled at 14.7% ABV in quantities of 85 to 100 cases. James Suckling rated the 2018 94 points, noting blackberry, boysenberry, dried rose petal, leather, vanilla, licorice and mocha on the nose, with ripe dark fruit, plum, dark chocolate, graphite and dusty cedar over supple yet chewy tannins and a long, mineral finish. Decant for two hours and serve with grilled ribeye, venison or roast lamb; it will drink through 2040. Vintages may vary; we ship the current release. 750ml bottle.
