Harbison Estate is a small family-owned property on the western benchland of Oakville in Napa Valley, where the Harbison family farms a few acres of Cabernet Sauvignon planted on the well-drained gravelly loam of the Oakville bench, in the neighborhood of some of the most famous names in California wine. Production is tiny and allocation-driven, with the wines made with consulting winemaking talent and a minimal-intervention approach: hand-harvested fruit, small-lot native fermentations, extended maceration and aging for roughly 20 months in French oak with a high percentage of new barrels, bottled unfined and unfiltered at about 15.0% ABV in 750ml. The Trail is the estate's Cabernet Sauvignon bottling, a dense, polished expression of Oakville: blackcurrant, black cherry, blueberry and plum over graphite, crushed violets, cocoa, cedar and a savory herbal edge, with powerful but finely grained tannins, lifted acidity and a long, layered finish. The 2018 vintage, a cool, long growing season widely regarded as one of Napa's best, gives it both density and freshness, and it will cellar for 15 to 20 years. Decant and serve with a dry-aged ribeye, rack of lamb or roasted duck. Vintages may vary; we ship the current release.
