Holmes Cay is a New York-based independent rum bottler that has been releasing rums since 2019, built around single casks and single origins bottled with no added sugar, color or flavor. The Heritage Blend Esotico Edition is its limited blend, pulling three rums from three very different traditions. From Barbados comes pot and column still rum from Foursquare Distillery, distilled from molasses. From Venezuela comes a column still rum, also from 100% molasses. And from Martinique comes a column still rum distilled from fresh sugarcane juice, the base of French-island rhum agricole. Each component was aged entirely in the tropics in its country of origin before Holmes Cay blended them, and the finished rum is bottled at 43% ABV, non-chill filtered and free of additives. Holmes Cay's own tasting notes describe mint, eucalyptus, dried cherry and clove on the nose, moving to orange peel, vanilla, cinnamon and banana chips on the palate, with almond cookie, milled sugarcane fiber and oak tannin on the finish. Wine Enthusiast picked up almond and vanilla with a saline sea-breeze note, coconut and espresso bitterness, and a notably long finish. It's a blend made for sipping that still has the structure to carry a Daiquiri.
