Papalin 7 Year Old Jamaican Rum
Papalin is the blending project of Luca Gargano at Velier, the Genoa company founded in 1947 that built its name bottling some of the rarest rums in the world. Where Velier's best-known releases are single-estate, single-distillery bottlings, Papalin deliberately revives the older, 19th-century tradition of the island blend, combining rums from different distilleries of the same country into one house style. The Jamaican edition brings together two of the island's most celebrated pot-still distilleries, Hampden and Worthy Park. Both rums are entirely pot distilled, and each is aged for a minimum of seven years at its own distillery in Jamaica before the two are married, so all of the maturation happens in the Jamaican heat. It is reduced to 47% ABV (94 proof) for this bottling; a navy-strength version at 57.18% has also been released. Astor Wines' notes describe overripe banana, toasted orange peel, warm tropical fruit, red currant and barrel spice, closing on a balanced, drying anise finish that offsets the fruit. A funky, fruit-heavy Jamaican for sipping neat, and a serious upgrade in a Mai Tai or a rum Old Fashioned.
