Kula Rum comes from Hawaii Sea Spirits, an 80-acre certified organic farm in Kula, upcountry Maui — the same operation behind Ocean Organic Vodka. Nearly everything about the rum is local: sugarcane grown on the acreage surrounding the distillery, fermented from fresh cane juice, distilled on-site in column stills whose stacks are visible right through the roof of the building, then blended down with deep ocean mineral water drawn from 3,000 feet below the Pacific just off the Maui coast. The brand was formerly sold as Deep Island Rum and was available only in Hawaii for years before reaching the mainland. The lineup covers three expressions, each built for a different job: the unaged Organic Rum at 80 proof, gluten-free and made for daiquiris and clean tropical mixing; the Toasted Coconut, infused with natural caramelized coconut sugars at 35% ABV, aimed squarely at Piña Coladas and frozen drinks; and the Dark Rum at 95 proof, engineered specifically to float on top of a classic Hawaiian Mai Tai thanks to its higher density. These are honest, affordable, island-made mixing rums rather than contemplative sippers — and in a Mai Tai made properly, that's exactly the point.
