Lagavulin Offerman Edition Charred Oak Cask is the third collaboration between Islay's most revered distillery and actor Nick Offerman, created, in his words, as the ideal dram to wash down a medium-rare steak. For this 2022 release, 11-year-old Lagavulin was matured in American white oak casks with a few European oak casks "for culture," all of which had held Scotch or wine before being shaved down and heavily re-charred.
Bottled at 92 proof, it suggests peat, chocolate and treacle on the nose with a hint of red berry and a passing creaminess, then a palate where the berries pull up a chair alongside pungent, peaty, woody and spicy tones and a pleasing chocolatey depth, finishing glowing, lingering and spicy. The Whiskey Wash scored it a perfect 10 out of 10. A limited edition for Lagavulin devotees, steak lovers and anyone who appreciates Offerman's prose on the box.
