Lagavulin 8 Year Old was first released in 2016 to mark the distillery's 200th anniversary, inspired by a visit from Victorian whisky writer Alfred Barnard, who tasted an 8-year-old Lagavulin in 1886 and called it "exceptionally fine." It proved so popular that Diageo made it permanent, and it now sits beside the legendary 16 Year as the younger, fiercer face of Islay's most revered south-coast distillery, founded in 1816.
Bottled at 96 proof, the 8 Year is Lagavulin with the volume up: intense peat smoke and a rich sweetness on the nose, then sherry, fruit and smoke on a vibrant, oily palate, finishing long and spicy. The Whiskey Wash gave it a perfect 10 out of 10. Younger and brighter than the 16 but every bit as characterful, it is the best-value bottle of Lagavulin on the shelf and a superb gift for a peat lover.
