Casamigos Mezcal
Casamigos Mezcal arrived in 2018, a year after George Clooney, Rande Gerber, and Mike Meldman sold their tequila to Diageo for up to a billion dollars — and it was built the way the tequila was: to be smooth enough for people who don't think they like the category. It's made in Santiago Matatlán, the mezcal capital of Oaxaca, from 100% espadín agave harvested at around six years, roasted for four to six days in an earthen pit over hot volcanic rock, crushed with a horse-drawn tahona stone, naturally fermented in open wooden vats, and double-distilled in copper pot stills — the traditional artesanal method. Bottled at 40% ABV in the black-labeled bottle. Expect balanced smoke rather than a campfire, with cooked agave, tamarind, pomegranate, and banana on the nose, opening into a smooth palate of roasted agave sweetness, mineral and herbal notes, a touch of citrus, and a gentle, lingering smokiness on the finish. Honest reception: mezcal purists find it soft, sweet, and made for the mainstream — it is, and the espadín-only, pit-roasted process is nonetheless legitimate. It's the mezcal that introduced a generation of tequila drinkers to smoke without scaring them off: a Mezcal Margarita, a Mezcal Paloma with grapefruit soda, an Oaxacan Old Fashioned, or over ice with an orange wheel. The Casamigos name carries it into every bar in America. Friend-made, in Clooney's words, for friends.
