Madre Mezcal Espadin
Madre Espadín is the single-agave version of the brand that makes mezcal approachable — and Mezcal Reviews' consensus is sweet, light, and suitable for beginners. Madre was founded in 2016 and is made by hand in the hills of Oaxaca by mezcalero José Inés García Morales and his family in San Dionisio Ocotepec, with other batches from the Vásquez family in Miahuatlán and Carlos Blas in Matatlán; the brand raised $3 million in 2019 to grow. Espadín is 100% cultivated espadín roasted in an earthen pit, fermented with local well water and wild mountain yeast, and distilled in the family's aged copper still, bottled at 43% ABV in the bottle with the hand-drawn illustrations. Mezcal Reviews' aggregate: vanilla, sugar, and smoke on the nose with grassy notes, vanilla sweetness on the palate — generally considered sweet and light, some pleasantly surprised, some finding it too soft to read as espadín, and most agreeing it's solid for mixing. Honest note, and it's the whole point: this is the gentlest mezcal on the shelf, built for cocktails and for the drinker who's been scared off by smoke — enthusiasts who want a Matatlán bruiser should reach for Fidencio or Gracias a Dios instead. For a mezcal Margarita, a Mezcal Mule, a Paloma, or a first sip, it's Madre, the easy way in.
