Michter's Barrel Strength Rye Whiskey, officially Michter's US*1 Barrel Strength Kentucky Straight Rye, is a single-barrel, uncut release first launched in May 2015, and it comes out only in limited annual batches. Michter's has championed high-quality American rye since the 1990s, and this is the fullest expression of that effort: each bottle is filled at the strength of its individual barrel, with most landing between 107 and 112 proof.
The secret is Michter's unusually low barrel entry proof of 103, well under the industry maximum of 125. Filling barrels at lower strength costs more in wood and warehouse space but pulls more sugars from the oak and produces a richer, rounder whiskey. Drinkhacker rated the 2024 release an A, calling it the best barrel-strength rye to date, with fresh pepper, baking spice, soft smoke, chocolate and old furniture on the nose, dark brown sugar, dried herbs and plump dark cherry moving into cinnamon buns and sweet black tea with lemon on the palate, and dark chocolate, barrel char, seasoned oak and toffee on the finish.
