Nardini is the oldest distillery in Italy, founded in 1779 by Bortolo Nardini in Bassano del Grappa, Veneto, where the original Grapperia still sits at the entrance of the Ponte Vecchio wooden bridge. The family has run it ever since, and Nardini is the name that made grappa a respectable spirit rather than a farmhouse byproduct. The grappa is made from fresh grape pomace (Merlot, Tocai, Pinot Grigio) fermented without added yeast in sealed cement vats, then steam distilled at low temperature and rectified in columns; the aged Riservas rest in Slovenian oak. The distillery also makes a line of bitters and liqueurs that are staples of the Veneto aperitivo: Rabarbaro (rhubarb bitter), Mandorla (almond with marasca cherry distillate), and the red gentian Bitter.
