Nardini Grappa Riserva 3 Year
Nardini is the oldest distillery in Italy still operating, founded in 1779 when Bortolo Nardini opened his grapperia at the foot of the Ponte Vecchio in Bassano del Grappa, below the Venetian Alps. The family still runs it today, a member of Les Hénokiens, the association of bicentenary family companies, and the original bridge-side shop is still open. Nardini distills a large volume of DOC grape pomace, the skins, seeds and pulp left from winemaking, selected from wineries in the Alpine foothills and blended mainly from white and red grapes, using batch distillation alongside column plants and reduced-pressure techniques that protect the aromatics. The Riserva is then aged three years in wooden barrels, which takes the edge off the young spirit and adds color and roundness. Nardini's description gives intense, complex aromas of ripe fruit and almond over a lightly spiced, vanilla undertone, with nuances of chocolate, tobacco and dried fruit and a long, persistent finish. Serve it at cellar temperature in a tulip glass after dinner, or pour a splash into an espresso the way they do in the Veneto for a caffè corretto.
