Neisson Single Barrel 2015 Rhum Agricole Ed Hamilton Selection
Neisson is the family-owned distillery at Le Carbet on the Caribbean coast of Martinique, making AOC Martinique rhum agricole from fresh-pressed sugarcane juice on a Creole column still, and Ed Hamilton, the importer and Ministry of Rum founder who brought the brand to the United States, has selected a handful of casks from its cellar for his own label. This one was distilled in 2015 and put into barrel on February 23 of that year; each year the barrels from the vintage were batched together and topped up with rhum from the same production run. In 2018, after 41 months in French oak, Hamilton bottled it at just under cask strength, 57% ABV (114 proof). It says single barrel on the label, but he found one barrel wasn't enough and drew two of them, 350 liters in all, which were batched together, so every one of the 426 bottles holds the same rhum, distilled, aged and bottled at Neisson in Carbet. The label notes baked tropical fruit, and the high strength keeps the grassy cane-juice character of the young spirit right at the front. A small one-time release with no follow-up batch.
