Hampden Estate Rum

This is the original Hampden Estate 46% — the first bottle the distillery ever released under its own name, in 2018, after 265 years of selling its rum to blenders and independent bottlers. Hampden Estate in Trelawny Parish, Jamaica, is the funkiest distillery on earth, its process unchanged since the 18th century: wild fermentation lasting up to two weeks in vats that are a two-century-old bacterial micro-habitat, dunder and muck-pit additions, double-retort copper pot stills, tropical aging. When Luca Gargano of Velier bought the estate's entire aged stock, this 46% and its 60% Overproof sibling were the launch — a blend of Hampden marques aged around eight years in ex-bourbon oak on the estate, bottled with no sugar, color, or additives. The Rum Barrel scored it 87: outstanding, unmistakably Jamaican with plenty of funk, and won't terrify anyone who's had a few neat spirits — preferred over the overproof for its balance, and one to keep in the cabinet. Rum Ratings' drinkers called the launch a historic moment for enthusiasts of 100% pot-still Jamaican rum: complex, dry, and intense, with vanilla, ginger, fruit, spice, and a touch of smoke, a piece of history that deserves respect. Note: Hampden has since reformulated the 46% as the 8 Year built on the OWH marque, so remaining bottles of this original blend are the last of the first. Honest note: very funky for a newcomer. Neat, or in a Daiquiri, for the collector who wants where it started.
