This is the other Havana Club — the one you can legally buy in America, made in Puerto Rico by Bacardí from a recipe smuggled out of Cuba. The Arechabala family created Havana Club in Cuba in 1934; after the revolution seized their distillery, Ramón Arechabala transcribed the family recipe by hand and gave it to the Bacardís, who'd fled to Puerto Rico. Bacardí owns the US rights to the name, Pernod Ricard sells the Cuban version everywhere else, and the two have fought over the trademark for decades — which is why this bottle says Puerto Rican Rum in large letters. Añejo Clásico is a blend of Puerto Rican column rums aged one to three years in ex-bourbon oak, bottled at 40% ABV with the Arechabala family crest in place of the Bacardí bat. Spirits Review found it better than a number of Bacardí's rums at the price, fuller in flavor than expected, with the honest verdict that it's a mid-range Puerto Rican rum rather than a Cuban one. Rum Ratings' drinkers call it a good mixer, nothing terrible, and an almost perfect cocktail rum that doesn't overpower. Honest note: Drinkhacker found the añejo label generous for a one-to-three-year rum, and Inu A Kena's head-to-head went to the Cuban original on the aged side.
