Ron Del Barrilito Two Star Aged Rum
Ron del Barrilito is the oldest rum brand still in production in Puerto Rico, made by the Fernández family at Hacienda Santa Ana in Bayamón since 1880 — on land granted to a Spanish privateer who arrived on the island in 1787. The family doesn't distill; they're masters of élevage, and the process has barely changed in 145 years. The signature step is maceration: a portion of the rum is infused with a blend of dried fruits and spices before aging, which gives the range its distinctive character. Two Stars is the youngest expression, aged three to five years entirely in white oak barrels that previously held Oloroso sherry in Jerez, with no artificial flavorings, added sugar, or caramel coloring — the bronze color is all barrel. Bottled at 43% ABV, and rated 89 points by Tastings.com. Expect a light-medium body with plum, almond, apricot, and vanilla over subtle smoke and wood, opening into caramelized fruit and sugarcane with cinnamon, ginger, and a distinctly hot white-pepper finish. That heat divides drinkers — some find it unbalanced, others consider it the character. One more piece of history: in 1942 the family set aside a "Freedom Barrel," to be opened in Bayamón's town square if Puerto Rico ever gains independence.
