Nikka Coffey Grain Whisky
Nikka Coffey Grain Whisky is Nikka's signature grain whisky, released in 2012 and now a modern classic. It is distilled predominantly from corn in the Coffey still, the continuous column still patented by Aeneas Coffey in 1830 that Nikka founder Masataka Taketsuru imported from Scotland in 1963 and still runs at the Miyagikyo distillery. The spirit is matured in re-filled, remade and re-charred American oak casks to preserve the sweet, mellow character of Coffey distillate, and bottled at 45% ABV.
It drinks like a cross between a bourbon and a Japanese whisky: vanilla, corn sweetness, melon and tropical fruit on the nose, a creamy palate of caramel, coconut and gentle spice, and a soft, sweet finish. It is delicious neat and makes an outstanding highball or Old Fashioned.
