Nikka Coffey Malt Whisky is a category-defying whisky: made from 100% malted barley, but distilled in Nikka's Coffey continuous still rather than a pot still, which means by Scotch rules it counts as a grain whisky rather than a malt. The Coffey still, imported from Scotland by founder Masataka Taketsuru in 1963, gives the malt a texture and flavor no pot still can. It is matured in American oak and bottled at 45% ABV.
The result is rich and unusual: banana, honey and cereal sweetness on the nose, a thick, oily palate with vanilla, tropical fruit, toffee and a hint of spice, and a long, creamy finish. It sips beautifully neat and makes a decadent highball.
