Nikka Discovery Miyagikyo Peated Single Malt Whisky is a rare 2021 release from the first Nikka Discovery series, a limited-edition program that highlights Nikka's experiments in every stage of whisky-making. Miyagikyo, the Sendai distillery founded in 1969, is known for elegant, floral, fruity malt; this expression is made only from the distillery's peaty batches, overturning that image. It is bottled at 48% ABV.
The result is a pleasant surprise: distinctive peat smoke and boldness wrapped around Miyagikyo's signature fruit, with orchard fruit, honey and gentle sherry-cask sweetness behind the smoke and an estery, fruity hint lingering in the aftertaste. It is a whisky for slow neat sipping and side-by-side comparison with the standard Miyagikyo.
