Nikka Discovery Yoichi Non-Peated Single Malt Whisky is a rare 2021 release from the first Nikka Discovery series, in which Nikka explores the diversity of ingredients and methods within each distillery. Yoichi, founded in Hokkaido in 1934 by Masataka Taketsuru, is famous for peaty, coal-fired malt; this expression is made only from non-peated malt, overturning that image. It is bottled at 47% ABV.
Without peat, Yoichi's other signatures come forward: a delicate balance of bright fruitiness, apple, pear and citrus, with a rich, oily mouthfeel and the distinctive light smokiness that comes not from peat but from Yoichi's traditional direct coal-fired distillation. The finish is long and gently toasty. Sip it neat.
