Nikka Taketsuru Pure Malt Whisky is Nikka's signature blended malt, named for founder Masataka Taketsuru, the father of Japanese whisky, and relaunched in 2020 with a new recipe. It marries malt whiskies from Nikka's two distilleries, coastal, peaty Yoichi in Hokkaido and elegant, fruity Miyagikyo near Sendai, with a higher share of Miyagikyo sherry-cask malt than before, and is bottled at 43% ABV.
The result is gentle malt flavor, fruitiness and an extremely well-balanced taste: red apple, honey and a hint of sherried dried fruit on the nose, a soft, rounded palate of malt, vanilla and a whisper of Yoichi smoke, and a smooth, medium-long finish. It is the perfect entry point into the world of Nikka, lovely neat and superb in a highball.
