Nikka Discovery The Grain Whisky is the third release in the Nikka Discovery series, the limited-edition program in which Nikka explores one facet of its whisky-making per year. For 2023 the subject was grain: The Grain is a blend of grain whiskies distilled in Nikka's Coffey column stills from corn, malted barley and other cereals, showcasing the diversity of spirit the Coffey still can produce. It is bottled non-chill filtered at 48% ABV.
It is rich and layered for a grain whisky: vanilla, honey and sweet corn with tropical fruit and toasted cereal on the nose, a creamy, oily palate of caramel, coconut, baking spice and a hint of rye-like pepper, and a long, sweet finish. Sip it neat to appreciate what Nikka can do with the Coffey still.
