Nikka Miyagikyo Single Malt Whisky comes from Nikka's second distillery, built in 1969 in the mountains of Sendai. Founder Masataka Taketsuru chose the site to contrast with his first distillery, coastal Yoichi: Miyagikyo uses lightly peated malt and pot stills heated by indirect steam, producing a softer, more elegant spirit with a strong sherry-cask influence. This no-age-statement single malt is bottled at 45% ABV.
It is fruity and refined: apple, pear and citrus with jasmine and honey on the nose, a smooth palate of dried fruit, malt and a gentle sherried richness, and a clean, elegant finish with a hint of oak. It is superb neat and makes a beautifully fragrant highball.
