Nikka Yoichi Single Malt Whisky
Nikka Yoichi Single Malt Whisky comes from Nikka's first distillery, built in 1934 in Yoichi, Hokkaido. Founder Masataka Taketsuru, who learned whisky-making in Scotland, chose the site for its Scottish-like climate: cold, coastal and surrounded by peat bogs. Yoichi still distills the old way, in pot stills fired directly by coal, and this no-age-statement single malt is bottled at 45% ABV.
It has pleasant peaty notes and smokiness from the coal-fired distillation, plus a briny hint delivered by the sea breeze during aging. The nose shows peat, orchard fruit and toasted oak; the palate is rich with malt, dried fruit, a touch of dark chocolate and salt; and the finish is long and smoky. It is the Japanese whisky for Islay fans, excellent neat or in a smoky highball.
