Oban was founded in 1794 by brothers Hugh and John Stevenson in the harbor town of Oban on Scotland's west coast, and it remains one of the oldest and smallest distilleries in the country, running a pair of tiny lantern-shaped copper pot stills that are among the smallest in Scotland. This 15 Year Old is the second release in Oban's exclusive cask-finished series, following a sherry cask edition. The single malt matured in American oak hogsheads before finishing in American oak casks that previously held port, and it's bottled at 52.1% ABV (104.2 proof), well above the core range. Diageo Master Blender Dr. Stuart Morrison describes bright red fruit notes with lusciously sweet and spicy flavors layered over Oban's signature maritime character, calling the result wonderfully mellow and well balanced. The port casks add a richer, fruit-driven layer to the distillery's coastal spirit.
