Pinhook Tiz Rye Time 5 Year Vertical Series Rye Whiskey is the second chapter in one of the most interesting long-term experiments in American whiskey. In 2020 Pinhook set aside 450 barrels of Indiana rye, made from the classic 95% rye and 5% malted barley mash, and committed to blending a new batch of roughly 50 barrels every spring as the stock ages from four to twelve years, so drinkers can follow the arc of a single lot of whiskey over nine years.
The 5 Year edition, released in March 2021, is bottled at 103 proof. Breaking Bourbon rated it 3 out of 5 and called it a well-balanced, fruit-forward rye that improves on the 4 Year, with fruit cocktail, light rye grain, peach and vanilla bean on the nose, oak, brown sugar, vanilla, leather and summer fruit on the palate, and rye spice, baking spice and vanilla on the finish. Pinhook's own notes add butterscotch, cardamom, dates and grapefruit leading to dark caramel, licorice, gingerbread and black pepper. Collect the series and taste the years side by side.
