Planteray O.F.T.D Rum
Planteray O.F.T.D. is the overproof dark rum from Maison Ferrand, the Cognac house behind the range formerly sold as Plantation, and the default overproof behind serious tiki bars. The initials officially stand for Old Fashioned Traditional Dark. Alexandre Gabriel built it to replace Plantation's Original Dark Overproof, which had been a Trinidad exclusive, and he did it by committee: six rum authorities, Jeff "Beachbum" Berry of Latitude 29, Martin Cate of Smuggler's Cove, Paul McFadyen of Trailer Happiness, Paul McGee of Lost Lake, Scotty Schuder of Dirty Dick and historian Dave Wondrich, tasted through hundreds of samples with him until the group agreed on a blend of Guyana, Jamaica and Barbados rums bottled at 69% ABV (138 proof). The producer's notes describe a deep topaz color; banana fritter, dried mango, dates and molasses on the nose with pipe tobacco, balsa wood and dark chocolate as it opens; and a palate of raw sugar, licorice, fruit mince pie and allspice over an intensely caney, grassy entry. It was designed for Zombies, Jet Pilots, Mai Tais and floats, where its weight holds up against juice and syrup, though Ferrand says it sips on its own too.
