Classic Rye is Polugar's purest single-grain statement — 100% rye bread wine, the spirit that Difford's Guide calls the original Russian style of vodka, and the base for the caraway-scented No. 3. Rye was the grain of Russia, and until 1895 its spirit was pot-distilled at low proof, tasting of the bread it came from. Then Tsar Alexander III ordered every pot still in the country destroyed and restricted distillation to taxed government column stills, and the old style disappeared for more than a century. Vodka historian Boris Rodionov rediscovered the original recipes — some dating to 1745 — in documents held at the Russian National Museum, and because Russian law still forbids the method, he built Rodionov & Sons in a forest in Poland, reconstructing copper pot stills from 18th-century drawings. Classic Rye ferments its own wash from malted rye, triple distills it in those copper pots, then clarifies with fresh egg whites and filters through birch charcoal, bottled at 38.5% ABV with natural spring water. Expect dark rye bread and a faint peppery grain spice on the nose, opening into an oily, weighty palate with genuine sweetness from the malt, a whisper of dried herbs, and a long, warming, bready finish with none of the neutral burn of modern vodka.
